Kirk Cousins To Vikings Appears To Be Formality

Kirk Cousins

Although Kirk Cousins’ agent says nothing has been finalized, everyone else seems to be saying it is finalized. Cousins appears set to sign with the Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday.

Cousins will reportedly get $28 million annually. There is word that the deal is fully guaranteed, which is unheard of in the NFL.

The deal has a number of important ramifications. First, Cousins is obviously an upgrade over last year’s starting quarterback, Case Keenum. He, not coincidentally, signed with the Denver Broncos on Tuesday. Unfortunately, you can now look at the Stinkings as legitimate contenders.

Second, paying that much money to the quarterback isn’t going to allow the Vikings to keep their defense fully intact. That has been the strength of their team.

Third, the contract is going to impact Aaron Rodgers’ extension with the Green Bay Packers. The good news is the Packers can now finish that up. Rodgers was waiting around for Cousins to work out his deal before signing his own extension. The question is now what cost does that come at?

Will Rodgers get a fully-guaranteed deal? And what will that be worth — $30 million annually?

A fairly team friendly contract from what I have heard, allows more financial flexibility for the Saints to try and make a couple more championship runs. The real fucked thing is the Saints somehow pushed cap charges into future years. They would have had $18 million in dead cap this year had they not resigned him, but now they can push those cap charges into the year after he retires.

The Vikings just agreed to pay $28M to a guy with the same average 2017 stats as Keenum. They were a contender with Keenum, they don’t need Cousins for that kind of cash. Brees is a winner with a ring, Cousins is a stat QB that put up yards for a team with no running game. Here are their stats 2017 is virtually the same…Cousins had 20 more average yeards per game and more INTs. Cousins had a lower QB rating and took double the amount of sacks.

  2. The Packers have been passed by the Vikings. It is official. Wouldn’t be surprised to see my Lions pass Green Bay soon too. Matt Patricia already getting versatile LBs in their prime on the free agent market. The Packers have wasted Aaron Rodgers. Embarrassing.

      • How does it feel to be a fan of a team that could care less about winning Super Bowls? The Packers have proven that because they have wasted nearly a decade of the greatest QB talent ever. He retires and the Packers become irrelevant again just like they were before they traded for Favre. The Lions kicked yiur ass without Rodgers. Wasn’t even close. That’s because your roster and coaching is overrated. Enjoy another wasted year of Aaron Rodgers.

It’s couldn’t care less idiot. The Lions have wasted every player to ever play there. How pathetic to get on here and say the Vikings passed the Packers…and you’re a Lions fan. Enjoy another year of being a fan of one of the worst franchises in history.

          • Your team can’t function without Rodgers. You needed OT to beat the Browns and Bucs. The Vikings just signed a good QB one year after playing in the NFCCG with a third string QB and their star running back hurt. Go cry.

    • Ferris

It’s official…. There is no measurement for the depth of your woe as a Lion fan….lets hang a banner in Detroit that the Vikings are better than the Packers…therefore the Lions are winners I guess. Now that’s embarrassing.

      • PF4L

C’mon now guys, play nice. Ferris….Enjoy your team and all the success they’ve had.

Dave…..Be nice and enjoy your last playoff win, relish that winning feeling, also relish the playoff win before that, back on December 22nd 1957.

    • KILLER

The Lions have already passed the Packers. Packers came in third last year behind the Lions.

The Packers are the third best team in this division. But the Bears are improving so even that is tenuous. Better be looking over your shoulder Packers!

  3. PF4L

If this deal is for real, and his contract is fully guaranteed, that is one of the dumbest things an NFL team could do.

Seeing as it’s the queens, i guess it would be par for the course

  4. joe

Dave the lions fan .Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson both retired early because they didnt want to play for the lions anymore .1 playoff win in superbowl era

    • The Lions are better without Calvin. They have a winning record and Stafford has better stats. You are only relevant because you had Favre and Rodgers. You were trash before them and will be trash after them. Get lost.

      • Ferris

        A winning record and stats…..OMG.
The Lions are trash…forever…before Stafford after Stafford anytime you want. You were trash with Calvin and without him, with Sanders and without him. You’re delusional.
You remember that playoff win the Lions had? Neither do I.

          • Ferris

What about the Lions playoff wins? You’re celebrating beating Green Bay without their starting QB, why is that an accomplishment? The whole world knows Green Bay is better with Rodgers…but go on celebrating winning against a second string QB. Whatever makes you feel good.

    In terms of the contract:
I think an all garaunteed contract had to happen at some point, not happy it’s with my Vikings. All they are doing is swinging the pendulum the full opposite way. If players want these full garaunteed money contracts they better live up to them or no team will ever do them again. At the same point contracts aren’t exactly fair to players today eirther.

In terms of the Vikings keeping all their pieces:
With cousins only asking 28mil a year they 100% can. Google articles about the Vikings signing cousins and keeping all their pieces. AND…. even if they lose 1 player, maybe 2, oh man we drop from what NUMBER 1 NFL DEFENSE to 3,4,5,6 I will take it to get a possible quarterback of the future.

Ferris in terms of cousins vs Keenum:
You keep comparing Keenum to last year be cousins to last year only, and keep deciding on which player teams should choose off that. Trying comparing cousins career to Keenum career. I will take cousins any day of the week over what Keenum did in 1 year only. Would I also take Keenum, yea of course I would to see if it plays out. Overall I am just saying it’s kind of dumb for you to compare them together in just 1 year, shit off that maybe we should go get Mark Sanchez he fucking beat tom Brady in the playoffs, that means he can win it all for us right?

See you cheesies next year it will be fun! I’d start working on that defense if I were you

#SKOLTIME makes great points I completely agree with.

Bonham does not normally write too inaccurately but this article is an exception. It begins in the third paragraph with the assertion that the Vikings are “now” contenders like it just happened and only due to Cousins. We were one of the last 4 teams standing last year. We’ve won the division 2 of the last 3 years despite worse injury situations than any other team in the NFL. We basically got to the NFC Championship last year even with a hand tied behind our back. Bonham, we were already contenders, this move just makes us even better.

Fourth paragraph is untrue. Is it a lie by Bonham or just ignorance? Unknown. AFTER this deal, if all years get an equal number of millions, the Vikings will have about 19 million in cap space and set for about 28 million next year. Supposedly we are reducing Latavious Murray’s hit soon as well and have a few other opportunities to clear space. Even without shifting money to out of contract years and various other games that could be played, the Vikings still can afford to resign all there coming free agents next two years. If we chose not to resign a Waynes or Kendricks or were outbid then we also have incoming draft picks.

In a couple years this contract will look cheap. Just like Aaron Rodgers’ does right now. That is how it works.

Piffle (PF4L) must be thrilled! He wanted the Vikings to sign Cousins and so did I. He is a closet Vikings fan.

Hot Damn! Today is a great day!

Jesus another Vikings fan on here. Learn to spell and punctuate before you post please… this rambling dribble you wrote makes me want to vomit…and nobody cares what you think.

      • #SKOLTIME

Actually for me I was just googling Kirk cousins Vikings and reading articles and came across this one. It’s not like I am out searching packers opinions. But definitely like to read all views and actually prefer reading about unbiased “homer” reporting.

I also know how far packers fans have their heads shoved up their own ass in their fandom as a parent that you actually think you have a chance at the division this year with that horse crap roster you have. Packers don’t even make the playoffs, remember it here and now, feel free to rub it in my face if they do. But with your defense and half assed offensive weapons outside of Rogers good luck. I’m outta here and done eating my time with delusional packer fans

          • Ferris

Is he a typical product of Minnesota public education? Remember it here and now, these MN people need another outlet in their lives.

We basically got to the NFC Championship last year even with a hand tied behind our back. Then we basically shit the bed and gave up in that game because we really didn’t belong there, and the Eagles proved that to be true, all too painfully. We were more competitive back in the NFCCG against the Saints, but ended up shitting the bed in that game also, so us viking fans are used to that.

Maybe my vikings can get back to winning a Conference Championship game, like we did not that long ago back in 1976.
