It was the Ice Bowl, a game that seems just as much myth or legend as it does real.
It was the 1967 NFL Championship Game and it was played on December 31 of that year. This was also the only time the Dallas Cowboys travelled to Lambeau Field to face the Green Bay Packers in the playoffs, as they will this Sunday.
Of course, the Cowboys and Packers were regular playoff foes in the 1990s. They met three times in the playoffs during the decade (1993-95), but all three match-ups took place in Texas Stadium. All three match-ups also resulted in Cowboys’ victories, the last of which was in the NFC Championship game.
Those teams of Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin were the kryptonite of Mike Holmgren’s Packers.
Overall, the Packers are 2-4 against the Cowboys in the playoffs. The other loss also came in Dallas following the 1983 season. The Packers’ win, other than the Ice Bowl, was in the 1966 NFL Championship Game — a 34-27 victory at the Cotton Bowl.
In light of that, go ahead and enjoy this. The Ice Bowl.
I think if you had to explain to an alien what football is, you’d show them a tape of this game.
