Earlier this week, word was Green Bay’s southern neighbor, De Pere, was going to approve a proposal to rename their portion of Ashland Avenue Mike McCarthy Avenue, after the Green Bay Packers coach.
That would basically force the cities of Green Bay and Ashwaubenon to follow suit, as Ashland Avenue runs through their burgs as well.
Well, not so fast, says De Pere.
Their city council sent the proposal back to the planning commission for further analysis, on Tuesday. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s dead. It just means they want to study the financial ramifications on the businesses located along Ashland, since they’re going to have to change their letterhead and such.
It may, however, derail Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt’s grand vision of having a dedication ceremony in August. While both Green Bay and Ashwaubenon are supposed to consider similar proposals later this month, who knows when De Pere will get around to doing anything about Mike McCarthy Avenue.
In the meantime, who wants to start a petition that we name the street on the side of The Oval Office Total Packers Drive? We find we’re most at home in The Oval Office when we’re in Green Bay, after all.
