The Green Bay Packers have drafted six cornerbacks in the first round of the NFL Draft. That list does not include Herb Adderley, who was drafted as a running back.
Of those picks, they have:
- 3 Total Busts — Ahmad Carroll, Terrell Buckley, Vinnie Clark
- 2 picks with nothing to show — Craig Newsome, Tim Lewis
- 1 Verifiable Stud — Willie Buchanon
Now, think about where the Packers have gotten their really good cornerbacks from in recent years.
- Sam Shields — undrafted free agent from Miami
- Tramon Williams — undrafted free agent from Louisiana Tech, cut by Houston and then signed by the Packers
- Charles Woodson — signed as a free agent from the Oakland Raiders
- Al Harris — acquired via trade with the Philadelphia Eagles
Obviously, finding a good cornerback is an inexact science.
But let’s look at it this way. The Packers haven’t hit on a first-round cornerback since 1972, so they’re obviously due.
