That’s his first MVP award this year, since we suspect he’ll be getting a bigger one at the end of the month. On Wednesday, the Pro Football Writers of American named Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers their 2014 NFL MVP.
This is not the official award handed out by the league, but it’s a nice start.
The PFWA MVP is voted on by members of the organization. It’s made up of people who write about football and is usually a good barometer for who will win the actual NFL MVP, which is voted on by football writers and presented by the Associated Press.
The last time the PFWA MVP and the official league MVP were not the same guy was 2003, when the PFWA gave it to Baltimore running back Jamal Lewis and the NFL MVP was shared by Indianapolis quarterback Petyon Manning and Tennessee quarterback Steve McNair.
You’re probably wondering what the difference is between who votes on these two awards. Obviously, there’s overlap. However, more writers are voting on the PFWA award, as that organization includes more than just the main local and national NFL beat writers.
