Jim Leonard Still Really Wants to Play for the Packers

Jim Leonard

Free agent safety Jim Leonard is a Wisconsin boy. Born in Ladysmith, played for UW. As you would expect, he’s also a bit of a Green Bay Packers fan and seems to be lobbying the team to sign him.

This isn’t the first time either. Back in February, Leonard talked about how he wanted to play for the Packers.

Now he’s talking about it again.

“It would mean a lot, but we’ve had a lot of conversations with teams, Green Bay being one of them,” says Leonhard. “They’re a great organization, I’d love to play for them but it hasn’t worked out up to now. You never know what can happen in the future, but we’ll see. They’re a great organization and it’s always fun to see the fans and have a lot of family that follows them closely.”

If you read between the lines there, it sounds like the Packers have told Leonard that they’d consider signing him if some guys got injured.

As it stands, they’re pretty well stocked at safety with Morgan Burnett, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Micah Hyde, Sean Richardson and Chris Banjo.

There isn’t really much of a reason to bring Leonard in and then cut him before the regular season, other than perhaps to sell a few jerseys. Those Abbrederis No. 84 jerseys are flying off the shelves!

Leonard is 31 and has played for five NFL teams. Not exactly the kind of guy you find on the Packers roster. Despite his age and the fact that nobody seems to want him, Leonard still picked off four passes for the Bills last year.

Of course, that doesn’t mean he’s getting a shot with the Packers or anyone else.

This is another example of the current regime’s idiocy. He is a better player than Chris Banjo. He could take his spot on the roster. Besides… Isn’t leadership in the back end a component we are missing?

    • I thought that Banjo did OK when he was given chances – he hits really hard, and has a lot more upside than a 31 year old that has played for five teams.

Yes, it is an example of idiocy considering NOT one safety on the packers squad had an interception last season. And Leonard had 4. Sure, they have dix now. But I cannot understand why anyone is satisfied with Burnett. It must be because TT just gave Burnett a new contract last year. It’s the only reason I can think of why the Packers would consider him over anyone else because they can’t cut him just yet.

Yes, still better than any of our (last year) safeties…
