Who’s In Play for Jermichael Finley?
Yesterday, we heard that the Seattle Seahawks were no longer interested in the services of free agent tight end Jermichael Finley.
Finley visited Seattle early in free agency, but failed his physical. He didn’t have medical clearance from the surgeon who performed spinal fusion surgery on him last year at the time either. Now, he does have that clearance.
However, no team has been quick to sign Finley. Which teams are still potentially in play? As best we can tell, these guys.
Green Bay Packers
Well, the Packers have said they want Finley back (if he’s able to continue his career). His locker still occupies a place in the locker room. He even stopped in for a visit last week. All of that would seemingly make the Packers the frontrunner for Finley. He’ll have to get clearance from their team doctor first, however.
New York Giants
We haven’t heard much about Finley to the Giants, but it makes sense. First, there’s the Ben McAdoo connection. The Packers’ former quarterbacks coach is now the Giants’ offensive coordinator. Second, who plays tight end for the Giants? Mark Bavaro? Right. That was in the 80s. No one has any idea who currently plays tight end for the Giants, including the Giants.
Miami has another one of those coaching pipeline things going. Dolphins coach Joe Philbin used to be the Packers’ offensive coordinator. They also have one of those we don’t know who your tight ends are things going. Keith Jackson is not walking through that door. Jermichael Finley might, though. It was reported that the Dolphins might be interested in signing Finley if he got clearance, earlier this offseason.
New England Patriots
Finley reportedly was visiting with a mystery team on Friday. It was a mystery because the team asked Finley to keep it a secret. Who does shit like this? The Patriots. They’ve got one tight end who’s a murderer (allegedly) and another one who’s pretty much injured all the time. The Patriots’ offense is at its best when they have two playmaking tight ends playing together. A healthy Rob Gronkowski and a healthy Finley would give them that again.
While we’re all speculating about where Finley might wind up, there’s still a real possibility he’ll wind up out of football. There’s a risk Finley could re-injure himself and there might not be a team that deems that risk worth taking.
