The Green Bay Packers haven’t ruled out tight end Jermichael Finley returning to the team.
Finley is yet to receive medical clearance to resume playing football after injuring his neck last season. He remains a free agent and no team is going to touch him until he gets medical clearance.
The Packers went out and drafted tight end Richard Rodgers in the third round on Friday. They also re-signed veteran Andrew Quarless earlier this offseason. Those two guys will be thrown into the mix with Brandon Bostick, Ryan Taylor and Jake Stoneburner.
That’s a lot of tight ends.
Ted Thompson says that choosing Rodgers doesn’t mean Finley isn’t going to be re-signed though.
“I don’t necessarily think the two are tied at all,” Thompson said.
“We were just trying to pick a good player.”
Thompson went on to say he hopes Finley can return. However, it seems pretty obvious he isn’t betting on that happening.
At this point, it looks like a waiting game that may never end. Finley recently had more tests on his neck. He hoped those tests would show teams that he was ready to go. The fact that there’s been no word on the results isn’t a good sign.
If Finley is able to come back and the Packers re-signed him, I think we’d all think that was great. If he doesn’t, well, then they’ve already got their five tight ends.
Because you gotta have at least five in today’s NFL.
