Well, the book isn’t totally closed on Matt Flynn yet. The Green Bay Packers will reportedly give him a workout at some point, according to Ian Rapoport.
It hasn’t been revealed when that will be, but team’s usually conduct workouts on Tuesdays.
Flynn was waived by the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday and went unclaimed. He started the season with the Oakland Raiders, but lost the starting job there to Terrelle Pryor and got cut during the early part of the season.
In other words, it hasn’t been very smooth sailing since Flynn left the Packers and signed that big free agent contract with the Seattle Seahawks two seasons ago.
There have been reports that the Packers were planning to look at Flynn before this one. However, word was the team wanted to make sure his elbow checked out. If Flynn has an elbow problem, that could explain his poor play this season.
Flynn is 22-of-34 for 227 yards, one touchdown and one interception this year. That doesn’t look terrible, but he’s also fumbled several times.
Signing Flynn still seems like a long shot. Seneca Wallace is the top guy in the absence of Aaron Rodgers and Scott Tolzien was recently elevated from the practice squad and we know the coaches think highly of him.
The chain of events for a Flynn reunion probably look something like this. 1. Wallace shits the bed this weekend. 2. Flynn’s elbow checks out. 3. Wallace gets released and Flynn gets signed.
Keep in mind that the Eagles have the 32nd ranked pass defense in the NFL, so No. 1 seems pretty unlikely.
