Your Dreams of Colt McCoy on Packers: Shattered!
The Green Bay Packers will not be acquiring the backup quarterback they have long been rumored to be interested in acquiring after all. The Cleveland Browns traded Colt McCoy to the San Francisco 49ers.
Yes, we know. Your dreams are shattered.
The Packers were hot after McCoy around the 2012 draft when the Browns were busy drafting Brandon Weeden to replace him. This offseason, the Browns signed retread Jason Campbell to compete with Weeden, who pretty much had no business starting for the team in the first place.
That left McCoy as the odd man out and everyone figured the Browns would cut him. Then they insisted they wouldn’t and we all laughed. “What moron team would give the Browns something for a guy that isn’t going to be on their roster anyway?” we all wondered.
Now you have your answer. A team with 14 draft picks.
The 49ers gave up a late-round pick, which will essentially turn out to be a seventh-rounder. And now they still have a whopping, league-high 13 draft picks this year. It saves them the trouble of drafting and signing a guy they’re going to end up cutting anyway. They also have a backup quarterback, which they haven’t had since trading Alex Smith.
As for the Packers, well, they still have McCoy’s old college nemesis, Graham Harrell. And he’ll probably get better.
