Bears New Coach Doesn’t Care About Beating Packers

The Chicago Bears new coach, Marc Trestman, appears to be the polar opposite of his predecessor Lovie Smith. That is, he’s putting zero emphasis on beating the Green Bay Packers.

When the Bears hired Smith, he said his No. 1 priority was to beat the Packers at his introductory news conference. Someone posed the question to Trestman on Thursday and he pretty much had no feeling for the rivalry.

“I’m not as familiar (with the NFC North) as I’m going to be down the road, but certainly I recognize there’s a rivalry in Chicago, and that’s important,” Trestman said. “But we have to treat every team we’re playing with the utmost respect. There’s difference makers on every team, we all know that, without going into names. And in every game you have to try and neutralize the difference makers first.

“It’s a highly competitive division and highly competitive league and everything starts in your division. But you’re not going to play your division harder than you’re going to play teams outside of your division. That’d be disrespecting the game completely. That’s the reality.”

Trestman may as well just have said, “Derrrrrrr?”

Obviously a real sharp hire there by Chicago. But we shouldn’t forget the Bears plucked this guy from the fertile coaching grounds of the CFL.

He’s probably still more concerned with beating the Edmonton Eskimos.

  1. The guy looks more like an art critic than a football coach. I’m sure all the FIBs are ecstatic over that kind of comment from their new leader.

I agree, but the dude has that certain “keep him away from my kids” look about him. I am delighted that the Bears hired this guy – he is as far away from the identity of that team as one could imagine, and in hiring him, Bears executives have assured at least a couple of seasons of teeth gnashing in Shitcago while this guy tries to turn the Monsters of the Midway into the Poindexters of the Midway.

“We respect the difference makers on every team. Austin Rodgers guy in GB and Arian Pederson in MN are guys we will have to try and neutralize…”

    Guru or Village Idiot?

Considering going undefeated in your Division and winning a couple games against lesser competition almost guarantees a trip to the playoffs…. and this goofball is going to treat all the games the same?

    I say Village Idiot.

Chicago can forget about winning the Division with this guy around. Because winning the Division is not on this guys list of important things to do. Respecting the game of football is.

I think he is right on. The reason the Packers lose to shit teams and kill teams when pissed off is a lack of professionalism and coaching to instill and inspire consistency throughout the year.

It shows a level of leadership and preparedness the Bears have not had in a while. You can call him names all you want but his attitude and track record should be respected.
