Is Clay Matthews Playing? Maybe
The Green Bay Packers biggest injury concern right now has to be outside linebacker Clay Matthews, who hurt his hamstring against Arizona before the bye week.
Initially, it was reported Matthews could be out a couple weeks, meaning he wouldn’t play against Detroit on Sunday. Well, not so fast, apparently.
“I’m not a doctor and I don’t want to act like one, either,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said on Monday. “We’ll see what happens. Let’s see how he responds to rehab today and tomorrow. I don’t know exactly where Clay is, but we have four (outside linebackers now), and when Clay comes back, we’ll have five.”
The problem, for the Packers, is none of those other four outside linebackers is Clay Matthews. Erik Walden and his 26 tackles, one sack and one interception comes the closest, but he’s not really in the same ballpark.
Dezman Moses is the only other guy who has recorded any stats this season with Green Bay. He has five tackles and a sack.
Frank Zombo spent the first half of the season on the physically unable to perform list and Vic So’oto was signed just yesterday.
The Packers still have a decent shot at beating the Lions without Matthews, but they obviously have a much better one with him.
Stay tuned.

I’d rather rest Clay up for the Giants. The Vikings beat the Lions twice. That’s not saying much for the Lions.

Agree with buddy. Rest 52 VS the lions. We have 4 OLB, surely they can fill the void while he’s out. We need a 100% healthy clay for the stretch run.

this is the ‘stretch run,’ brah

we should win both games but I think the Lions game is mo’ important – division game! we want that north division crown!!!! if clay can play put him in…..maybe limit his snaps and get Zombo & So’oto some chances to crush Stafford.

Ironically, the last time the Packers played the Lions, neither Matthews nor Woodson played. Same as in that game, I think the offense is the key. Jordy Nelson and Kuhn should be back. So, you’ll have the same offense you had versus Houston, minus Bulaga. Play well on offense and you win this game.
