Do Packers Have Burgeoning Tight End Controversy?
By most accounts, second-year Green Bay Packers tight end D.J. Williams has had a pretty nice camp. That’s been more noticeable with starter Jermichael Finley sitting out the majority of it with a concussion and thigh injury.
We doubt the Packers will open the season with anyone other than Finley as their No. 1 tight end, but Williams’ play thus far tells you he’s in line for more reps this season. Those will come at Finley’s or one of the receiver’s expense.
As we all know, if they come at Finley’s expense, Finley is going to have something to say about it. He’s apparently already feeling threatened.
“Not taking nothing away from D.J., but camp is camp,” he said. “San Francisco has a great defense. It ain’t going to be nothing like camp, I guarantee you.
“Like I said, we can talk about this and that, but once you get out there on the grass it’s a whole other thing. We’ve been going against the third, fourth team (in practice). We haven’t been going against the first team consistently.”
In other words, we in here talkin’ about practice! Listen, we talkin’ about practice. Not a game! Not a game! Not a game! We talkin’ about practice.
Yeah, seriously, the Packers are using Williams differently than Finley, even lining him up in the backfield. He’s also not going to draw the double teams Finley will and has proven sure-handed thus far. That’s something Finley wasn’t last season.
Williams will indeed need to show he can do it on the field during the regular season, though. If he does, we’re sure Finley will have something to say about it.

Discounting the accomplishments of the guy trying to take your job rather than acknowledging you need to step up and separate yourself from him is what all consummate professionals do.
I am so god damn tired of this guy’s ego and rhetoric. Every single player not named JerMichael Finley puts the team before themselves. If he hasn’t realized that and curbed his attitude by now, he NEVER will. Just imagine the shit that will start flowing out of his mouth if he ever has the monster year he keeps promising.

Frankly, I would love to say I’ve seen differently, but I haven’t. From what I’ve seen DJ has been reliable but no where near ready to take Finley’s place.
That clip of AI will NEVER not be funny. It belongs with Dennis Green’s rant about the Bears among the funniest sports clips of all time

If Finley plays to his full potential, we may be talking about a guy who could be the best tight end in NFL history. That is saying a lot and some of you bloggers might disagree, but Finley has freakish measureables and talent. If he stays healthy this year, you will see what I am saying. Also, DJ Williams is a different kind of tight end that Finley. They are used differently and both will get a lot of playing time. One more thing I wanted to add to my comments: The Finley/ Williams combo does have the potential to be better than the Gronkowski/ Hernandez tight end combo in New England; I know its a bold statement, but if you think about it and compare Finley to Gronk and compare DJ Williams to Hernandez, what are your conclusions?

I have never liked Finley–he reminds me of Moss, Terrell Owens. I hope this kid surpasses him, and that we let Finley walk when his contract up. Too many other priorities without the attitude. Oh and his wife is pure trash.

We will always have controversy and/or drama at the tight end position as long as Jermichael Finley is in Green Bay.
Tweetiebitch needs to shut up, ice his sprained vagina, & prove something on the field.

Okay, Finely. Put your money where your mouth is and catch the &*(()*& ball!

This article is a bunch of *rap. There is no doubt that Finley is, and will remain the #1 TE on this roster. Indeed, this article is just an excuse of Finley haters to spew their ignorance.

Jermichael Finley is his own worst enemy. Once again he has let his alligator mouth over run his mockingbird brain. Instead of bad mouthing D.J. Williams or any of the other tight ends, he ought to be mentoring them. There is a lot of talent in the tight end position, and that is a blessing. What if Finley gets hurt? With Quarless on PUP, we need these guys. They are young and need the experience. A team player would realize this and not be so self-centered. Oh, by the way, D. J. Williams is a heck of a nice guy. Not that that matters really, but it is refreshing to see someone with his potential not be stuck up. I have followed his career a long time. I hope he is successful in the NFL.

D.J. will wait out for his shot to prove himself on the field. He may be nowhere near Finley’s talent and skill so far, but like he did here in Arkansas, once he is on the field, he will not disappoint.
