Firstly, Bears can still sign Forte to a long-term deal. Also this allows them to not lose the season if Forte holds out for a few games. Maybe he is looking for AP style money. Wouldn’t that be stupid?

Secondly, Bears did the smart thing by trading for Marshall. If he had been cut, either they would have to pay a lot more money or watch him sign elsewhere. While the Dolphins (if what their owner is saying is true but wasn’t that the guy who was gonna get Manning or Flynn) won, the Bears won too. Marshall might yet be banned for 4 games but they have him under contract for 3 seasons.

All in all solid moves so far.

With Forte, the Bears never had as much cap space as everyone thinks, so they locked him up for a second so they can see what they have to work with after other moves are made. They’ll get back to that after other cards are dealt. And they can do it again next year.
With Marshall, they got a talented big threat for at least a couple of years, without giving up huge amounts of money (therefore cap space to pay Forte with) reserved for free agency. Plus, Marshall’s likely to resign if he does well.
