Packers Ax Brandon Chillar
Chillar was a major player for the Packers a year ago.
The Green Bay Packers enviable inside linebacker depth isn’t so enviable anymore.
A day after severing ties with former first-round pick [intlink id="139" type="category"]Nick Barnett[/intlink], the Packers cut Brandon Chillar.
Like Barnett, Chillar was coming off a season lost to injury. Unlike Barnett, Chillar wasn’t 100 percent when he showed up in Green Bay.
Chillar suffered a serious hamstring injury while training during the lockout.
The Packers could have put him on the physically unable to perform list, but chose to cut ties with him instead. The move saves the team $2.6 million in cap space.
Before his shoulder injury last season, Chillar was a mainstay of the Packers defense. He was the primary reason [intlink id="80" type="category"]A.J. Hawk[/intlink], who’s since signed a hefty contract extension, didn’t play a snap in the Packers week one win over Philadelphia.
Chillar and Barnett saw all the snaps at inside linebacker in that game.
Things have changed quite a bit since then.

I wonder if the departure of Chillar and Poppinga will have them reconsidering parting ways with Barnett? I think another likely move may be to move Brad Jones inside.

Packers don’t need Asomugha. DB is their deepest position.
With all the salary the Packers have dropped, it does make it possible that either Cullen Jenkins or James Jones aren’t going anywhere.
Notice, neither have gone anywhere yet, and the Packers are collecting enough money to pay SOMEONE.

Asomugha is an interesting thought with moving Woodson to free safety, but only if TT can get him cheap.

Jenkins and Jones are as good as gone, with the money they are clearing in cap space they will sign their rookies and save the remainder of the cash to resign Sitton, Nelson, and Finley. My guess would be that atleast two of those guys should be seeing new contracts.
TT certainly isnt banking money to make any kind of splash in FA, his first priority is to secure the core of his team for the long term. As well as he drafts there is no need to invest overpaid talent!
