Hester To Bears: Sign Receiver Just Like Shitty Ones We Have
For some reason, the [intlink id="13" type="category"]Chicago Bears[/intlink] have never given quarterback [intlink id="405" type="category"]Jay Cutler[/intlink] a legitimate No. 1 receiver, but Devin Hester, the team’s No. 2 receiver, has a solution.
Hester wants the Bears to sign another receiver exactly like the ones they already have — Washington Redskins’ free agent Santana Moss.
“Anybody that can come in and help out the team, I’m down for it, and a guy like (Moss) can come in and really help out a lot,” Hester said, according to Vaughn McClure of the Chicago Tribune. “I’m hoping we can get him.”
The thing that Hester, and apparently everyone in the Bears’ front office, is overlooking is Cutler plays his best ball with a big, strong receiver. Exhibit A: Cutler to Brandon Marshall, [intlink id="27" type="category"]Denver Broncos[/intlink], 2007-08.
Moss is a 5-10 speedster much like — you guessed it! — Devin Hester.
The 5-11 Hester caught 40 balls for 475 yards last season. The only guy who looked like a legitimate receiver on the team, but is still probably no better than a No. 2 anywhere else, Johnny Knox — a 6-0 speedster, caught 51 balls for 960 yards.
Moss is also 32, which means he’s on the downslope of his career.
Oddly enough, the Bears last big acquisition at receiver was that of a 32-year-old Muhsin Muhammad in 2005. Coming off a season in which he recorded 1,405 yards and a league-leading 16 receiving touchdowns, Muhammad played three seasons of his six-year contract with the Bears before being waived. His yardage totals in those seasons were 750, 863, and 570.
Guess who made the decision to throw $16 million at Muhammad in the first three years of that deal? Bears general manager Jerry Angelo.
Moss is coming off a 93-catch, 1,115-yard season.
Clearly he’s a great fit and probably has a lot left in the tank at 32.
Please, Chicago, go throw a bunch of money at Santana Moss.
