The honeymoon between quarterback Jay Cutler and the Chicago Bears… or at least Chicago Bears fans and the Chicago media, didn’t last long.
The guy who was supposed to take the Bears to the promised land (preseason, 2009), quickly became the guy who was being booed off the field (regular season, 2009) on his way to throwing a league-leading 26 interceptions. Cutler was an easy scapegoat (postseason, 2009) when the Bears finished 7-9.
This season, the Bears got off to a 4-1 start, that included a big victory over the Green Bay Packers in a Monday night contest. Cutler, again, could do no wrong. Cutler started four of those five games (he sat out week five’s win with a concussion) and had six touchdowns against three interceptions.
However, the luster has, once again, faded.
The Bears (4-3) have lost their last two games and now trail the first place Packers (5-3) by a half game.
In the last two losses, Cutler has thrown one touchdown and four interceptions. Perhaps indicative of the Cutler style, he threw all four interceptions to one guy — the Redskins DeAngelo Hall in week seven.
And so, we have an injury ward full of Bears fans.
Why?
Well, motherfuckers are spraining ankles, breaking ankles, scraping elbows and bruising chins jumping off the Jay Cutler bandwagon.
These assholes need medical treatment!
That brings me back to the Chicago media. Although they’re trying to hide their identities, they’re starting to turn up in the injury ward, as well.
The first guy to turn up was the Tribune’s Dave Haugh, who is wondering, if somehow, the Bears could trade Cutler to the Washington Redskins for Donovan McNabb.
You see, McNabb is a Chicago guy. He also got benched by Redskins coach Mike Shanahan last week because… well, let’s cut to the chase… he isn’t really that good.
Cutler, on the other hand, is a Mike Shanahan guy. He enjoyed the most productive years of his career under Shanahan, when they were both in Denver. He didn’t throw nearly as many interceptions, at least compared to touchdowns, in Denver.
So, obviously…
Yeah, this will happen.
Totally.
Anyway, I don’t want to sell Haugh short. He obviously sees the problem with Cutler and he isn’t ready to totally give up on him, although some Bears fans may see the situation differently.
Cutler is talented, but the guy is immature and has no leadership ability. In fact, all of us on the better side of the Wisconsin/Illinois border knew this when you guys were talking Super Bowl, circa preseason 2009.
We pointed these things out, but you didn’t want to listen.
Thankfully, for you, the Bears play the winless Buffalo Bills this week.
Honestly, I can see the Bears losing this game. The Bills have a sometimes-potent offense, which put up 34 against Baltimore two weeks ago and 26 against Jacksonville the week before.
Nah, never happen…
Let’s give the benefit of the doubt and assume Cutler will only throw one pick and the team from Chicago will pull it out — a scenario that should be expected.
If not, well, I’ll probably be uttering these words when Haugh and the rest of Chicago makes their leap.
We need a nurse in here, stat!
We’ve got another broken ankle!
