Brad Jones Goes On Injured Reserve
No joke. The Green Bay Packers have lost their 10th player to season-ending injured reserve.
Today, the team added linebacker Brad Jones to the list.
Jones suffered a significant shoulder injury in Sunday’s win over Minnesota. During today’s press conference, Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Jones would need surgery.
“Brad Jones has a significant shoulder injury that is going to require surgery. We don’t have our hands around exactly when the surgery is going to occur and so forth, but it’s the same shoulder that Brad injured in training camp. He has been fighting through it. He wants to try to keep going. We haven’t made a decision on which direction we are going to go, but at some point it will require surgery.”
The decision was made when the Packers were awarded defensive tackle Howard Green off waivers, this afternoon.
The 6-2, 365-pound Green is an eight-year veteran who’s played for Baltimore, Houston, New Orleans, Seattle and the Packers’ opponent this week, the New York Jets. He played collegiately at LSU.
Green has only one tackle this year and only 79 in his career. His only year as a starter was 2004 in New Orleans.
However, Green provides the Packers a big body for a defensive line that doesn’t have a lot of those, right now. Nose tackle B.J. Raji is the only one of the Packers starters who’s healthy.
Defensive end Ryan Pickett is expected to miss this week’s game with a sprained ankle. Defensive end Cullen Jenkins is battling a calf injury that kept him out of the Minnesota win. That leaves the Packers with only C.J. Wilson, Jarius Wynn and Mike Montgomery.
While Wilson and Wynn played well against Minnesota, they’re both undersized for 3-4 defensive ends. The same goes for Montgomery, who doesn’t seem to fit the Packers’ scheme at all.
In other words, expect to see Green on the field this week.
Jones, meanwhile, finishes the season with 27 tackles and no sacks. He did, however, fracture Brett Favre’s ankle.
