Vikings Reportedly Close To Acquiring Randy Moss
After failing to land Vincent Jackson earlier this season, the Minnesota Vikings may now get the playmaker they’ve lacked in the passing game this season.
Per Jay Glazer, the team is close to reacquiring receiver Randy Moss from the New England Patriots.
The deal is reportedly contingent on Moss working out a new contract with the Vikings. Moss expressed displeasure with his contract — he is in the final year of his current deal — earlier in the season.
Moss was a non-factor in the Patriots’ Monday night win over the Miami Dolphins, catching zero passes, but has nine receptions for 139 yards and three touchdowns on the year.
The Vikings have been hurt by the absence of Sidney Rice, the team’s leading receiver last season. Rice is on the physically unable to perform list and cannot return until after week six.
If or when the Vikings acquire Moss it would finally pair him with quarterback Brett Favre. The Green Bay Packers had an opportunity to acquire Moss from the Oakland Raiders in 2007, but general manager Ted Thompson refused to trade for Moss when the receiver demanded a one-year contract. The Packers were adamant Moss sign a two-year deal.
Thompson’s stance on Moss helped create a rift with Favre that was never repaired. Moss, who re-signed with the Patriots after his initial one-year deal was up, caught 250 passes for 3,765 yards and 47 touchdowns in his first three seasons in New England.
If Moss returns to the Vikings, it could dramatically shake up the dynamic of the NFC North. The Vikings, who are 1-2, could reasonably be considered the favorite if they acquire Moss, as their passing game has been the only part of their team not clicking.
Meanwhile, the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears, the co-leaders at 3-1, have shown some chinks in their armor. The Packers have no running game and the Bears’ offensive line is terrible — they gave up an NFL record nine sacks in the first half of Sunday night’s loss to the New York Giants.
