This is just speculation, but the fact that the Green Bay Packers lost starting strong safety Morgan Burnett to a season-ending ACL tear and the San Francisco 49ers released Micheal Lewis, the team’s opening-day starter at strong safety, seems like a nice coincidence.
Lewis had a falling out with coach Mike Singletary last week and left the team. He later asked for his release and his wish was granted, Monday. The beef with Singletary stems from the coach telling Lewis his starting spot was safe. He later reneged on his commitment and decided to go with rookie Taylor Mays.
Lewis is in his ninth season and he’s missed only one game due to injury in the past three. He’s recorded 11 tackles this season.
His best season in San Francisco came in 2007, when he posted 104 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble. Lewis started his career with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he was a Pro Bowler and All Pro in 2004, when he recorded 88 tackles, an interception and two forced fumbles.
Lewis’ best years may be behind him, but the Packers could do worse than signing a smart veteran while they wait to see if Atari Bigby will come off the physically unable to perform list.
Bigby is eligible to return after week six, but will likely take a couple weeks to get back into form.
