Vince Lombardi

Just needs to be the subject of a one-man mime show to complete the cycle

Vince Lombardi is enjoying somewhat of a renaissance nearly 40 years after his death.

In addition to a feature film starring Robert De Niro and a Broadway play starring Dan Lauria, the former Green Bay Packers coach will receive the documentary treatment from HBO later this year.

The documentary is produced by HBO Sports and NFL Films and will air on December 11.

“Vince Lombardi lived a remarkable life,” said Ross Greenburg, president of HBO Sports. “There isn’t a football fan alive who has not heard of Vince or does not know his famous line, ‘Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing,’ but how much do people really know about this complicated genius? We plan to peel back the layers for a biography that will serve as the definitive account of an NFL icon.”

According to Don Walker of the Journal Sentinel, the production will include interviews with Lombardi’s son, Vince Lombardi Jr.; daughter Susan Lombardi; brother Harold Lombardi; former players, including New York Giants Sam Huff and Frank Gifford, Green Bay Packers Willie Davis, Jerry Kramer and Bart Starr, and Washington Redskins Sonny Jurgensen; broadcaster John Madden; biographer David Maraniss; and writer Jerry Izenberg.
