Harrell will go to camp as the No. 3 quarterback

The Green Bay Packers released four players yesterday in preparation for signing their draft picks. Among those released was quarterback Noah Shephard, meaning the Packers will open training camp with three quarterbacks on their roster.

Behind Aaron Rodgers and Matt Flynn sits former Texas Tech star Graham Harrell, who hasn’t had much of an opportunity in the NFL despite throwing for 5,111 yards and 45 touchdowns in his senior season. Harrell went undrafted and was on the roster of the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders in 2009. The Packers brought Harrell in for a tryout and signed him in May.

Harrell still isn’t guaranteed a roster spot — the Packers carried only two quarterbacks on their roster last season — but his chances look good.

Released along with Shepard were cornerback Trevor Ford, safety Khalil Jones and linebacker Tim Knicky.

All four players were undrafted free agents. Ford appeared in three games after being signed in 2009. The other three players were signed after this year’s draft.

The Packers should begin signing draft picks in the next week.
