While the comparison to Thompson is valid, it’s probably easier to judge DB’s without pads than DL’s. DB’s need to play mostly in space and maintain coverage discipline, they’re secondary responsibilites are to contain the runner, hit and lastly take on blockers at the point of attack (the part Thompson couldn’t do, and you can only see in pads).
