Oh, sure – it was a “joke”. Your comment reminded me exactly of those kinds of “jokes” that people make when they really want to be condescending and/or a jerk about something – but opt to “cleverly” disguise their hang-ups in the form of a “joke”.

I know the difference between a real joke, and some snide “joke” imposter crap that’s actually a stealth put-down.

Consciously or not, you are passively-aggressively showing some kind of personal problem toward Sterling Sharpe, and/or toward (ex) athletes in general. I’m tired of journalists and basement-dwelling bloggers like yourself who take these sort of shots at athletes.

Sterling Sharpe, in particular – doesn’t fit the stereotype of the dumbo (ex) jock that people like to perpetuate, and you know it. He’s actually pretty darn intelligent. Maybe that’s what bothers you – so you feel the need to nitpick his use of a word that he CLEARLY used in jest, and “jokingly” perpetuate this false idea that he’s uneducated or “dumb”.

If it was really a “joke”, why didn’t you make the same “joke” about the word “Fandemonium”??? I mean, you can’t find that word in a Webster’s either, right? But you willingly used “fandemonium” without making any disparaging remarks or “jokes”, while getting on your high horse when Sharpe uses the word “fantabulous”. Yeah – this discrepancy exposes you, buddy.

Oh, get real. YOU are the one who is “slow” if you’re going to try to use Sterling Sharpe’s use of the word “fantabulous” as “proof” that he’s not too educated or bright. Some people will take any flimsy opportunity to rag on athletes’ so-called intelligence-level or English-language skills – ignoring things like CONTEXT and COMMON SENSE. You’re acting as though no Harvard-educated Mensa has ever used a made-up trendy word that’s not in Webster’s: I assure you, even these geniuses use non-words like “fantabulous” in light-hearted, non-serious situations (at least the ones who don’t have a stick up their behinds).

Here’s a clue: I think Sterling’s use of “fantabulous” is a result of his not taking himself (or the situation) too seriously – NOT a result of his not knowing any better. Maybe if you were over your envy or ignorance, and/or desperate grasp at some sense of superiority, you could “lower yourself” to use the word.
