Welcome to Favre in December, Vikings’ Fans
Quarterback Brett Favre gave Green Bay Packers’ fans and Minnesota Vikings’ haters around the world an early Christmas present Sunday night, throwing two picks and playing generally like crap in a 30-17 drubbing by the Arizona Cardinals.
According to the Green Bay Press-Gazette’s Tom Pelissero, the latest interceptions give Favre 48 picks and 28 TDs in the final five games of the season plus the playoffs since 2004. Stats LLC puts Favre’s passer rating in December at just 61.8 percent since 2005.
Favre has a habit of trying to do too much late in the season and with the Cardinals holding running back Adrian Peterson to a season-low 19 yards on 13 carries, the old man again put his team on his back and tried to make something out of nothing – with similarly disastrous results.
“I made some decisions that I haven’t made up to this point,” Favre said after the game, “and I’m disappointed about it.”
Minnesota’s defense looked stunned and confused most of the game. Kurt Warner torched them for 285 yards and three touchdowns, with Larry Fitzgerald catching one of those TDs and netting 143 yards on the night and Anquan Boldin finishing with two touchdowns and 98 yards receiving.
“We didn’t have ‘it’ tonight,” Vikings coach Brad Childress said.
Chilly better hope his team gets “it” back or things could get interesting in the NFC North – especially if the Packers beat the Ravens on Monday night and go to 8-4. The Vikings are also falling farther away from any chance at home field advantage throughout the playoffs after the New Orleans Saints survived a scare by the Washington Redskins to remain unbeaten.
Good news is my commute was a breeze in the Twin Cities this morning, which surprised me. I figured all the bandwagon jumpers would have abandoned the Vikings ship by about the second quarter last night and be over the loss by now. But apparently, many are still home today nursing hangovers and/or crying over their star quarterback showing his true colors at the wrong time of the season.
Let’s hope that continues.
