Bart Starr on Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers
From one great Green Bay Packers’ quarterback to another. Well, not exactly.
Bart Starr was on the Brian Kenny radio program the other day, where he touched on various subjects, including your least favorite ex-Green Bay Packers’ quarterback Brett Favre and our main man, Aaron Rodgers.
Interestingly, Starr seemed to infer that Favre’s success this season is largely a result of the team around him, more than anything he’s done individually, but where Bart really went into a diatribe was when asked about Brett’s departure from Green Bay.
“As I look back on it, as all of us look back on it, I thought the organization was put in a very tough situation when you retire, and then you unretire, and then you retire. To go back to the retiring first, well then they have to make an adjustment. They’re getting ready for the draft. They’re doing all kinds of things to prepare themselves for that happening – when he’s going to step away. And then he comes back after they’re making those preparations and says ‘No, I’m going to come back. I’m unretiring.’ I thought the team was put in a very difficult situation. My wife and I have admired Brett for years. We have become good friends with him and Deanna, so there’s nothing personal about this. I just felt that the team was the one suffering, from our perspective as from many others. Of course, when you get traded and you demand something and then you go off to the Jets, and then when you leave the Jets after one year, and say ‘Well, I’m leaving, give me my release and so forth,’ and then you turn around and sign with the Vikings, to me it’s those type of situations that really muddied up the whole picture, if you will, and created the thing that you’re talking about where so many people are very, very upset.”
Starr went on to talk about Rodgers after discussing Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Drew Brees.
“If he had the team around him these others do, I guarantee you Aaron Rodgers would be right there at the top as well. All you have to do is look at the talent. Look at what he’s done and where he’s going each week. Except for those sacks he can’t get away from because they’re not blocking well, this guy is incredible for a young quarterback.”
Unfortunately, Starr does not discuss the Rawhide Boys Ranch.

Bart Starr is becoming goofier and goofier all the time. Talk about having a team around you. How many hall of famers did Bart play with – something like 14. So far, Brett has had one, Reggie White. Bart never had to carry the Pack like Brett did and Aaron Rodgers wouldn’t be half the QB he is if he didn’t learn from Brett. Ted Thompson gutted the Pack in 2005 and started building from the draft, with Rodger’s being pick first as the QB of the future. How would you feel if you were Brett, had all the major NFL passing records, played every game for 17 years and found the Pack was using you to keep people in the sets without helping you win through free agency. Does anyone doubt the Pack would have been in the SB in 2007 if Ted would have gotten Randy Moss for nothing. At 39, Brett could not wait for Ted to bring the team up to snuff through the draft, so he wanted out of Green Bay. So both Ted and Brett got what then wanted, but I think it might have been better for the Pack to get a few free agents for Brett and let him play two more years. If football is a business, it seems the Pack let a lucrative opportunity go to the Jets and now the Vikings. Ted, you chose poorly. Bart, your opinion means nothing, because I saw you play in your last two years and you should have retired after 13 years, because you could not throw and out pattern to save your life. Brett still has a gun Period.
