Green Bay Packers’ cornerback Charles Woodson will be named NFC Defensive Player of the Week on Wednesday, according to the Green Bay Press Gazette.
Woodson, 33, had one interception, two forced fumbles and a team-leading nine tackles in Green Bay’s season-saving 17-7 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. Defensive coordinator Dom Capers called it “one of the better games that I’ve seen a defensive player play” and I would agree.
Not only did Woodson’s performance play a major role in the win, it also at least temporarily rejuvenated not only the Packers’ defense, but the entire team at a critical point in the season. Woodson played a different spot in each of the four main defensive schemes used by Capers against Dallas, and held tight end Jason Witten, who came in as the fourth leading receiver in the NFC with 44 catches, to just five catches for 47 yards.
Woodson is now tied for third in the league with five interceptions. He also has one sack and three forced fumbles. Now in his 12th season, he was named NFC Defensive Player of the Month in September, and was the only member of the Packers on Pro Football Weekly’s midseason All-Pro team.
Clearly, Woodson is headed for a career season if this kind of play continues. Congrats, Charles. This is an honor that’s well-deserved.
