The Brett Favre Effect
They may not be able to sell many more season tickets because, let’s face it, the Minnesota Vikings have the worst fans in the world, but they are a hell of a lot better team with Brett Favre playing quarterback.
Despite what I think of him personally, Favre’s game-winning throw to Greg Lewis yesterday was one hell of a play.
It made me throw up in my mouth a little bit, but as ESPN’s Kevin Seifert notes, neither Tarvaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels could have made this throw.
The Vikings are a much better team with Brett Favre behind center than they are with Jackson or Rosenfels.
Predictably, everyone in and around the Vikings are blessing Favre as the game-saving deity that we’ve all seen him be.
“I was on the sidelines saying, ‘Be Brett, be Brett, be Brett,’ ” defensive end Jared Allen said. “The Silver Fox came through.”
Although he could have just as easily thrown an incompletion or an interception (which we’ve all seen him do quite a few times, as well), Favre did come through.
I can’t say I like it, but Brett Favre won a game for the Vikings. Without him they are 2-1. With him, they are 3-0 heading into next Monday night’s Yarn at the Barn versus the Green Bay Packers.
That’s why you pay a quarterback $12 million a season. That’s why you disrupt team chemistry to bring him in. That’s why you lie to your own players about him.
Brett Favre makes the Vikings legitimate. We didn’t have the proof through the first two games of the season when Favre was handing the ball to Adrian Peterson most of the time, but we have it now.
I need to go rinse.
