The Packers linebacking corps is adequate and nothing more. It is not exceptional.

Nick Barnett has never been exceptional and he is in decline. He had good speed and was perhaps better than average. If he returns to his best form (a big "if"), he'll be slightly better than average and nothing more. He is not a game-changer. Of course he should be in a rotation right now because of his knee, the missed time and the development of others in that rotation (who show promise).

AJ Hawk is assignment-sure, but has limited athleticism. Great heart in a great college player ... and an adequate pro.

Aaron Kampman is an exceptional player and to see him out in coverage downfield after an NFL career as a defensive end demonstrates his versatility. Could you imagine anyone else out in coverage actually playing defensive end (and doing so at a pro bowl level)? Of course not. But the jury is out on how he'll fit and what kind of pass rusher he'll be in the 3-4.

Bishop showed great promise in the the preseason when the Packers were the greatest team ever in NFL history. I jest only to emphasize that it was the preseason, nothing more. I hope his development continues and he gets more of a shot. He does have the POTENTIAL to be a game changer, but at this point it's only potential.

Chillar is solid. He's great in coverage. He moves a lot better than I expected. He's not overpowering, but he is athletic. He's an important player to have on the team.

I like Nick Barnett. He seems like he gives it all on the field. I appreciate his frustration with not being on the field as much as he likes. I hope every player on the bench feels the same (even if they constructively choose not to express it in that fashion). I hope as the season progresses, Barnett gets more comfortable in the scheme and more confident in his knee. Until that time (and maybe after) he should still be in a rotation. He's simply not a guy that you "have to have on the field."

Chillar was a standout last year and looks even better this year. He's our only LB who's not a liability in pass coverage and has shown an ability to get to the QB.
I think Barnett should keep his mouth shut and start making some plays. I had trouble with his antics when he was making plays for us, but it's been quite a while since he's been an impact player for us.

I think Chillar offers us a lot more going forward. He's got the speed to make plays and although he disappointed a bit against the Bengals, I'm thinking he will be a valuable player for us this season.

I'm wondering if Barnett is past his sell by date?
