Favre a Dividing Force in Minnesota?
Well, you had to know this would happen.
It appears that one Brett Favre is creating “issues” or perhaps a “schism” in the Minnesota Vikings locker room, something that can only be good for the Green Bay Packers and the rest of the NFC North.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that several Vikings favor the team’s other quarterbacks – Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels – over Favre because they feel they give the team a better chance to win.
In the words of one NFL source, Favre has “little support” in the locker room as Minnesota prepares for its Monday night preseason game against the Houston Texans, Schefter writes.
As Kevin Seifert points out, these chemistry issues are nothing new for the Vikings and Favre.
Favre’s impact on locker room chemistry has been an issue since this spring, when defensive end Ray Edwards joked that Favre is a “prima donna” and questioned whether he would use the same dressing room as the rest of the team. Favre’s arrival last week, days after the Vikings broke training camp, did little to dispel the issue.
Now, if Favre goes out and lights up a few opposing defenses and wins a few games, these issues will probably fade away.
On the other hand, if that doesn’t happen and the Vikings start the season slowly they could very well implode.
There isn’t anything that can tear a team apart faster than a “schism” in the locker room, that is compounded by losing. It’s hard to play with teammates that don’t support you, and who think someone else should be doing your job. It’s no secret that Favre didn’t have a lot of fans in the New York Jets’ locker room last season, when several players spoke publicly about how distant Favre was and how he had a locker in his own private area of the team’s facility.
Winning masks everything, but let’s keep our fingers crossed that Minnesota’s Favre experiment blows up in their face.
