Since nothing has been going on with old whats-his-name (unless you work at ESPN, where the “There’s Corn in Brett Favre’s Shit” story has got everyone on red alert), we thought we’d post about another former Green Bay Packers great, The Walrus AKA Mike Holmgren.
Pretty much as soon at The Walrus decided he was retiring from coaching last season, he started to have second thoughts. Remind you of anyone?
Earlier this week, Holmgren announced that he is ready to work again.
Former Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren said he has made the decision that he wants to work again and is open to the idea of coaching, but has not made a final decision on whether he will do that or work in a front office somewhere.
Why do I mention this?
Well, first, we like Holmgren (not as much as we like his daughters, but that’s another matter). Despite the way he left Green Bay, Holmgren led the Packers to two Super Bowls, as coach of the Seahawks he never beat the Packers when it counted (isn’t that right, Matt Hasselbeck?), and, he produced the aforementioned hot daughters (if anyone has any recent photos, please email me).
Secondly, there’s the Mike McCarthy factor. Don’t like McCarthy. Don’t think he’s a good coach. Watched him get outcoached on numerous occasions over the past two years. Tired of it.
For anyone who disagrees with me, I point to the 2008 NFC Championship game as Exhibit A.
I fully expect McCarthy to continue to demonstrate his ineptness throughout the 2009 season. I expect him to develop poor game plans. I expect him to mismanage the clock. I expect him to fail to make in-game adjustments. I expect him to fail to inspire passion, pride or fire in his players. I expect him to do all of these things and more, like he has so many times before.
I also expect the Packers to be looking for a head coach after the season, as I did this past offseason. Last season, the blame for the Packers failures were laid at the feet of defensive coordinator Bob Sanders and his staff. Any failures this season will have to be attributed to the head coach.
Although Bill Cowher is still the first choice to succeed McCarthy, Holmgren is a spectacular second choice to have. In all honesty, Holmgren is probably a better fit for the personnel the Packers currently have, at least offensively. Think of the things Aaron Rodgers could do in a Mike Holmgren offense.
The thought makes me drool.
